Bob arrived on one of my training courses quite disgruntled. He’d been managing a team for years, but a new company policy required him to have a one to one meeting with each person once a month. He’d give it his best shot, but grumbled to me that it was a waste of time. “I ask them how they’re doing. They say they’re fine, then we waffle a bit to fill the time up….”

It sounds like he was right – or possibly missing the point about why the company wanted regular one to ones. Of course, they are not the only way of keeping a healthy working relationship with your team, but many organisations see the benefit of having them in place. They are pretty pointless, though, unless the people involved see the advantages too.

We spent some time thinking about what can be achieved through one to ones, looked at ways of structuring the meeting, then turned to concentrate on the skills and techniques that can be used before practising some of them.

Bob was visibly relieved by the end of day, saying that he knew what he had to do now.

You can see a course outline here but do remember that we will always tailor it meet your requirements.
